Storage and handling of lyophilized peptides

Best practices for receiving, storing, reconstituting, and handling lyophilized research peptides in a laboratory setting.

On receipt

Inspect the package on arrival. Vials should be intact, the lyophilized cake should be visible, and the seal should be unbroken. Transfer to long-term storage immediately.

Long-term storage (lyophilized)

Lyophilized peptides are most stable at −20°C or colder, protected from light and moisture. Avoid storage in self-defrosting freezers if possible.

Reconstitution

Allow the vial to reach room temperature before opening to prevent moisture condensation on the cake. Add solvent slowly down the side of the vial. Do not vortex or shake aggressively — gentle inversion is sufficient.

Short-term storage (reconstituted)

Once in solution, most peptides are stable for several weeks at 2–8°C in bacteriostatic water. Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Document reconstitution date and conditions on the vial.
